How Voluntary Benefits Actually Get Paid: Payroll Deduction and How Claims Actually Get Submitted
Voluntary benefits get set up once during enrollment, and the payroll deduction side runs quietly from there. The claims side is where people usually have questions — here's how both actually work.
Payroll Deduction: Pre-Tax or Post-Tax, and Why It Matters
Voluntary benefit premiums get deducted either pre-tax or post-tax, and which one applies changes more than just this year's paycheck. Pre-tax deductions lower taxable income now, but generally make a future benefit payout taxable income when it's actually paid out. Post-tax deductions cost slightly more now, in exchange for that future payout coming out tax-free.
Why Disability Coverage Is Usually the Exception
This tradeoff matters most for disability coverage. Many employers deliberately set disability premiums to deduct post-tax, specifically so that if an employee ever actually files a claim, the benefit payment comes to them tax-free. The small pretax savings on premium is usually worth far less than owing income tax on a disability benefit at the exact moment someone actually needs that money.
If You're One of Our Clients, Send Your Claim to Us
The carrier is still who ultimately reviews and pays a claim — that doesn't change. What changes is who handles getting it there. If you're a Service 1st client with a claim — accident, critical illness, hospital stay — you send it to us, and we assist in actually getting it submitted, rather than you having to figure out the carrier's process on your own. (Not a client yet? A carrier's own claims line is still the right place to start.)
What That Actually Takes Off Your Plate
You're not left tracking down the right form, guessing what documentation a carrier needs, or wondering whether something got received. We handle the submission process for our clients, so your part is simply getting the claim to us in the first place.
Final Thoughts
Voluntary benefits run quietly from HR's side once the payroll deduction structure is set correctly at enrollment — pre-tax or post-tax, deliberately. And for our clients, when a claim does come up, it's not something you're left to navigate alone with the carrier — send it to us, and we take it from there.
